Sumptuous still-life paintings of fruits, wines and cheeses can add an elegant and artistic touch to the space, while other touches like flowing, floral patterned curtains in soft colors or elegant chair cushions in velvet or velour can help create a welcoming space filled with beautiful touches.
Countertops often dictate the backsplash color and style, says Kira Van Deusen, designer at Covenant Kitchens & Baths in Westbrook, Conn. Also consider fixtures like your lighting and hardware. Try mixing metallic tiles in different shades with various finishes, such as brushed stainless steel, oil-rubbed bronze or even an antique brass. By including small tiles of marble or granite, you can pull in the countertop color without being boring with a panel of granite that extends up from the countertop, says Barrie Spang, interior designer at Lee Meier Interiors in Westlake, Ohio. As for glass tiles, check out some of the newer tiles with a bit of crackle or frosted finish, Spang says.
Appliances and accessories run the gamut in Italian kitchen design, from simple stainless steel designs that can work with anything from a Tuscan design to Mediterranean style Italian kitchen, to vintage or more modern styles in bright and bold colors. In general, the more natural and earthy the overall design, the better it will pair with appliances and cooking accessories that feature a more straightforward, traditional design, as opposed to leaning more contemporary or modern.
