When preparing to renovate an old kitchen or install a new one, exploring the range of kitchen cabinet components will be an essential first step in creating a custom kitchen to reflect your own unique style.
The color black lets the cabinetry lines speak out and is a backdrop for the other elements in the room, says Susan. And, she notes, there's nothing like a black background to make metal panel inserts, such as chicken wire or mesh, stand out. Black cabinetry can be a backdrop or a focal point like an island, a single wall or even interspersed with other colored or wood-finish cabinetry.
The process will require you to remove the cabinet doors and hardware, clean all of it thoroughly and paint or stain it all separately. You'll need to apply primer before you paint, and you'll have to decide if you're going to use a paint brush or a sprayer.
Another way to accessorize your kitchen cabinets is to alter one or more of the actual cabinet doors. Adding glass or glass-paneled doors provides an open look in your kitchen and allows you to display stylish cookware, dishware, cookbooks or other kitchen collectibles. If you aren't sure you are organized enough to reveal the contents of your kitchen cabinets, consider semi-transparent or frosted glass instead; those materials won't reveal any unsightly jumble that might accumulate over time.
"Black is a great accent and grounding tool for the eye. In a traditional-style kitchen, a big black island or unfitted piece of cabinetry with a black rub-through finish would act as an elegant counterpoint to the other cabinetry within the space, perhaps distressed cherry, or even crisp white," says Susan.
Painting and staining is an inexpensive way to update your kitchen cabinets and make them like new again. To get that smooth, like-new look, the trick is in the light sanding between coats of paint. If you do it yourself, be prepared to be working on it over the course of two or three weekends or a full week or two, and plan for your kitchen to be out of commission during this time.
