White countertops often get a reputation for being high-maintenance. Stark-white surfaces are known for showing every crumb or being more prone to show a stain. That's not necessarily the case, though. Keep in mind that the look of your countertop depends largely on the type of surface you use, from stone and stone-look countertops to solid wood options.
One of the easiest ways to add modern flair to the kitchen island: choose a signature color (think tangerine orange or lipstick red) to distinguish the space. Whether or not that color is repeated in another kitchen design element is up to you—there's no rule that says an island's counter (or color) needs to match its counterparts on the perimeter of the kitchen.
Exposed beams, visible seams, aged and blemished wood—these are some of the hallmarks of rustic style when it comes to designing the home. And similar notions apply to creating the perfect rustic kitchen island.
