Kitchen Island September 10, 2017. One of the easiest ways to add modern flair to the kitchen island: choose a signature color (think tangerine orange or lipstick red) to distinguish the space. Whether or not that color is repeated in another kitchen design element is up to you—there's no rule that says an island's counter (or color) needs to match its counterparts on the perimeter of the kitchen.
Cabinets & Drawer September 05, 2017. A kitchen with a lot of natural light is a natural for black cabinets. If your kitchen is short on sunshine, then make sure you have a good lighting plan for it — pendant lights, under-cabinet lights, even in-cabinet lights if you decide on those metal grid inserts or glass-paneled fronts. One caveat from Jennifer: Don't put lights too close to the cabinet doors because this will create a "hot spot" where the light hits them. Even if you do have a lot of natural light, more of the man-made kind will keep the kitchen from becoming a black hole. Jennifer's other caveat is that black cabinetry may show smudges and fingerprints more easily than wood ones, so consider your cleaning style in your decision.
Cabinets & Drawer September 15, 2017. Another cabinet door accessory that adds style and "space" is glass. Glass or glass-paneled cabinet doors will open up your kitchen and allow you to display all your stylish cookware, dishware and kitchen collectibles. If you're more interested in disguising clutter, try semi-transparent or leaded glass.
Cabinets & Drawer April 05, 2017. Clean, crisp lines and angular cutouts will work best with a modern or contemporary design, whereas Shaker or craftsman-style cabinets tend toward a more traditional look for your unfinished kitchen cabinets. Decisions regarding the style may also influence the material you use for your kitchen cabinets—more traditional styles generally feature wood almost exclusively, whereas modern and contemporary styles may feature artificial materials, which are less likely to be available in an "unfinished" state.
Cabinets & Drawer October 15, 2017. "In Victorian times, they used dark woods, like walnut, cherry or mahogany, and stained them almost black," Jennifer says. Couple those with a creamy granite or marble countertop, and you've got the perfect period look. Susan envisions a more modern take: "frameless black cabinetry with reeded glass inserts, stainless-steel appliances, art glass pendants and a mosaic glass-tile backsplash."
Cabinets & Drawer September 09, 2017. The most common and often most affordable way to customize your kitchen cabinets is through the use of cabinet hardware. Door handles and drawer pulls come in a wide array of colors, materials, sizes and shapes. They are usually metal but can differ enough to change the look of your kitchen from traditional to modern or vice versa.
Kitchen Design Ideas September 12, 2017. One of the trademark features of Italian kitchen design is color. Natural hues and the vibrant colors of the Mediterranean Sea are often featured, contributing to a design that's at once welcoming and lively. Shades like ocher, burnt orange, terracotta, gentle yellows and brilliant blues are often deployed to suggest a relaxed yet elegant Italian lifestyle—one in which cooking and eating enjoy a place of primacy.
Kitchen Design Ideas September 16, 2017. That's not to say that modern kitchens can't, shouldn't or don't feature man-made materials—they almost always do, and often to great effect. Granite countertops, sleek hardwood floors and expertly designed wooden furniture featuring the signature curves and angles of modern design can often be found in modern kitchens.
Countertops September 07, 2017. "We're seeing a new trend in natural stone countertops that combines different textures," says kitchen designer Lindsay Davis, of Naples, Fla. To get this exciting look, designers use stone with two different finishes, one sandblasted to a matte finish, the other polished to a smooth gloss. Lindsay says that a typical application might be to use one finish for an island or raised snack bar area and the other for the rest of the kitchen countertops.
