Accessories and other design flourishes can build on a modern kitchen theme. Cabinet doors may be replaced with frosted glass or a sleek laminate or wood veneer to create a modern look. Mixers, blenders, coffee makers and other accessories are available in bold colors and unique designs that seem positively science fictional. Cookware, utensils and flatware are all available with a modern twist, both in terms of design aesthetic and bold, up-to-date colors.
When it comes to materials, Mediterranean kitchens tend toward natural ones, or at least natural-looking synthetics. Hardwood floors are common, usually in lighter shades to continue a light, bright and welcoming feel. Cabinets are often constructed from high-quality woods like cherry; they can be left in their natural state, stained or painted to add a colorful element to the design. Backsplashes may be terracotta or mosaic tile, and present a great opportunity to add color, visual interest and even an artistic element to the kitchen design. In particular, mosaics may show off intricate designs displaying scenes redolent of the cultures of the Mediterranean, with seascapes, fishing scenes or sea life often depicted.
Countertops often dictate the backsplash color and style, says Kira Van Deusen, designer at Covenant Kitchens & Baths in Westbrook, Conn. Also consider fixtures like your lighting and hardware. Try mixing metallic tiles in different shades with various finishes, such as brushed stainless steel, oil-rubbed bronze or even an antique brass. By including small tiles of marble or granite, you can pull in the countertop color without being boring with a panel of granite that extends up from the countertop, says Barrie Spang, interior designer at Lee Meier Interiors in Westlake, Ohio. As for glass tiles, check out some of the newer tiles with a bit of crackle or frosted finish, Spang says.
